Report

USA as expected easily won the 2015 IFAF Men’s World Championship in American Football, held in the historic city of Canton, Ohio, where the National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920. Having defeated Mexico (30-6), Japan (43-18) and France (82-8) in the Preliminary Round, they then again defeated Japan 59-12 in the Gold Medal Game. Mexico accounted for France (20-7) in the Bronze Medal Game and Australia won for the second time (42-14) against South Korea in the 5th Place Playoff.

The odd number of teams (seven), meant an unusual schedule which meant Brazil did not advance to the 5th Place Playoff despite defeating South Korea, who lost all their matches, and Mexico, who lost both matches in the First Group, advanced to the Bronze Medal Game in the absence of Canada. (Presumably matches against Canada were scheduled at one stage and then awarded later, which would account for the discrepancies, however, there is no mention of this on the IFAF World Championship website, nor a reason for Canada’a absence, the second most powerful country in American Football.)

Report

AMFA has produced Mexican College Football Rankings (American Football) since the split caused by the Private Colleges forming their own Conference: CONADEIP Premier. From 2014 to 2017 there was a different winner each year, although all came from CONADEIP Premier: Aztecas UDLA Puebla in 2014, Borregos Salvajes (White Rams) Monterrey in 2015, Aztecas UDLA Puebla again in 2016, and Borregos Salvajes Toluca in 2017. Tigers UANL Nuevo Leon won it for ONEFA 8 Grandes (Public Colleges Big 8) in 2018 and Burros Blancos (White Donkeys) IPN Zacatecas in 2019, again from ONEFA 8 Grandes. Without an Overall Playoff Final between the two big Conferences, the College Champion was decided by a poll conducted by AMFA. This is similar to the system used by US Colleges for 100 years until quite recently to decide the National Champions in NCAA Football, although the NCAA in USA now has a College Football Playoff.

Grey Cup Champions 1909-Present [References: ]

Report

Earl Grey donated what is now the Canadian Football League’s Championship Trophy in 1909, thus starting a tradition which lasts to this day. The Grey Cup was the first of the great North American Football Championships, starting the Modern Era, and was first won by the University of Toronto. It is now in the sole possession of the Canadian Football League, which broke away from the Canadian Rugby Union in 1956. Toronto Argonauts first won the Cup in 1914 and last won it in 2012. Winnipeg Blue Bombers first success came in 1939 and after a long drought won the last one currently played in 2019. Ottawa Rough Riders won the Cup in 1940 for the first time and are considered the same team as the Ottawa REDBLACKS by the Canadian Football League, with the REDBLACKS a new replacement franchise who won the Grey Cup last in 2016. Calgary Stampeders first and last victories came in 1948 and 2018, and Montréal Alouettes in 1949 and 2010. Newly merged Hamilton Tiger-Cats first and last Cups were in 1953 and 1999, while Edmonton Eskimos’ (now Edmonton Football Team) maiden trophy was in 1954 and last in 2015. British Columbia Lions from Vancouver last won the Grey Cup in 2011 and first won it in 1964, while Saskatchewan Roughriders took the title for the first time in 1966 and last time in 2013.

Global Football Kilimanjaro Bowl 2011

Global Football Logo [Refeences: 1]

Arusha, Africa – 21 May 2011 – Drake Bulldogs (USA) 17 CONADEIP All-Stars (Mexico) 7 – A fourth Quarter comeback by Drake University Bulldogs (USA) delighted a 12,000 strong Tanzanian crowd at the very first College American Football game in Africa on 21 May 2011. The Global Kilimanjaro Bowl, organized by Global Football, played at the Sheik Amri Abedi Memorial Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania. After Billy Janssen scored the first historic points in the first half with a 27 yard Field Goal for the Bulldogs, the CONADEIP All-Stars, from the Private Colleges League in Mexico went ahead in the third quarter when Jose Reyes, who had severely damaged the Drake University defense with 124 yards rushing, went in from 5 yards out. Trailing 7-3 in the Final Quarter, the Bulldogs sent in Back-Up Quarterback Nick Ens who completed an 8 yard Touchdown pass to Joey Orlando to put the Bulldogs back in front, then, also in the final quarter, linebacker Patrick Cashmore recovered a fumble on the 8 yard line, running in for a TD to make the Final score 17-7 to Drake after the successful Point After Touchdown kick. Following the game, on the 25th May, players from both gteams climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain at 19,341 ft, in the nearby Tanzania National Park. The event held was to raise funds for an orphanage in Tanzania [References: 2]. Ireland’s Glenn Baker, from near Athlone, Co. Roscommon, and originally Cork, had previously done that feat, in 2007, raising £4,000 for Charity while at Mount Ida Mustangs on a College Football Scholarship. [References: 3]

Report – General

The 2019 Regional AA Arena Indoor Football League season in USA was historic as it was the last season of its’ parent League – the Arena Football League – the original Arena League folded after the 2019 season. The regional AA Leagues, however, played full seasons in 2019, covering the entire USA, and also playing a league cross-border between San Diego, California, and Baja California, Mexico.

The Champions of the Leagues were Jacksonville Sharks (13-1, National Arena League, No Playoffs), West Virginia Roughriders (11-0, American Arena League, No Playoffs), Duke City Gladiators (Albuquerque, 35-29 versus Salina Liberty, Champions Indoor Football), Sioux Falls Storm (56-53 versus Arizona Rattlers, Indoor Football League), Idaho Horsemen (40-20 versus Reno Express, American West Football Conference), Duo Sports Thundercats (San Diego, 2-0 Super 8 Football League Battle for San Diego) and Diablos Ensenada (28-18 versus Duo Sports Thundercats, Baja Bowl VIII 2018)

About Arena Indoor Football

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulties  in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there are Rebound Nets in Arena Football either side of the goalposts, allowing the ball to return into play, which are not present in Indoor Football.

Ian Jones, born in Cork, was appointed Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Houston Texans in 2017. He started doing voluntary work, mostly coaching in the GAA while still in College in 2010, where he was Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with Cork GAA (Official) and one other coach, Mark Kilgallon, who is now Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the AFL’s Sydney Swans, saw potential, and got him an Internship at the University of South Carolina, using his contacts with Craig Fitzgerald, whom he had worked with at Harvard University in the mid-2000s.

He worked 12 Hours a Day at USC, seven days a week, 8 hours each day coaching the Football Team.
[1] After two summers at USC he moved on to London Welsh Rugby Union team, and his first Professional Contract. he was surprised at how low-level the set-up was. They had just been promoted to the Premiership, but the budget was small compared the Colleges in the USA, where Stsdiums can seat 110,000 people and there are massively successful alumni who can fund the College Programmes. He decided to phone Fitzgerald again and tell him it was not working out and secured a contract with Penn State College Football Team.

He stayed for three years at Penn State coaching the University’s Football Team as well as being involved in Coaching 30 other sports during his time there, including the College Rugby Team, and the USA Women’s Rugby Squad which also had s base there. While involved with the USA Women’s Rugby Team he got to go to Canadaon Tour with the, and also travel to Wales, England and the World Cup in france in 2014. . By now Fitzgerald had moved on to become a Coach at the Houston Texans. Jones ended up taking a low level position with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, and from there went on to the Houston Texans in 2017, after Fitzgerald called him up when a position became vacant. [1]

At the Texans a typical day stated at 3 A.M. the S&C Staff train at 3:45 AM, At 6 AM they Preview the Day and set up the Weight Room. At 7 AM they train the 30-or-so Rookies (First Year Players). At 8 AM they have a team meeting and 8:30 AM the S&C staff meet for injury/rehab reports. 9 AM they train the five Long Snappers, Kickers and Punters. 10 AM is full practice – Three Hours Long. At 1 PM until 3 PM the non-Rookies are trained individually, staggerred, before they move off to their own individual training. After that it calms down – they eat, review what needs to be done in the Weightroom, look at data from Practice. at 5 or 6 PM another full team meeting and at 7 PM a Final walk-through for the Day. Once the meetings are finished around 8 or 9 PM, that’s the day done. [1]

From the Texans he took up the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Salt Lake Stalions, of the Alliance of American Football, a AAA American Football League, the equivalent of Championship in English Soccer, and from July 2019 to July 2020 was Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance at Wagner College, Staten Island, New York, a multi-sports NCAA College programme position. In December 2019 he took up the position of Head StrengthConditioning Coach at Rugby United in New York, and also the role of Strength and Conditioning Consultant. From June 2018 to August 2020 he was also Head of Physical Performance of USA Rugby and at the same time Physical Performance Consultant. [References: 33-35]

The European Super League was an American Football League featuring four teams from Poland and two from Lithuania in the Topliga and three from Russia and one from Belarusin the East European Super League, that followed on from the Central European Football League (2006-2016) and the Amsterdam Crusaders (International-only schedule 2018) as the top level European American Football League played on a weekly basis in two or more countries.

The two Divisions (or Leagues) played separate schedules until the Final. Topliga Champions were Warsaw Eagles who defeated Bydgoszcz Archers, both Poland, 20-0 in the Topliga Final. Lithuania’s Vilnius Iron Wolves were defeated in the Semi-Final. East European Super League Champions were Moscow Spartans who had a surprisingly easy 42-16 victory over St. Petersburg North Legion in the EESL Final. There were plans for a European Super League Topliga – East European Super League Final between the Warsaw Eagles and EESL Champions Moscow Spartans but it appears to have not taken place.

Report – General

A total of 32 teams played in Major Rival Football Leagues to the National Football League in 2020. With the Canadian Football League cancelling the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic, it was left to the XFL, Liga de Futbol Americano Mexico, The Spring League and Liga Xtrema de Futbol Arena Mexico to compete with the NFL. Only The Spring League, however, would complete its two seasons, the Spring season in Las Vegas with only three teams playing a total of two matches each, won by Las Vegas Hughes, and the Fall Season, in San Antonio, with the only Championship game played: Generals triumphing 37-14 over Aviators. LEXFA Mexico only completed its short Spring Season, and cancelled its full-length Fall season, and both the XFL and LFA Mexico abandoned their seasons after five weeks of a 10 week season.

Report – XFL 2020

XFL Logo [References: 11]

The XFL continued to play behind closed doors through the coronavirus outbreak, which stopped a lot of sports leagues. It finally shut up shop on March 12 after a Seattle Dragons player had tested positive for coronavirus, after the game with Houston Roughnecks on March 7. This player had also participated in the February 29th game against St. Louis Battlehawks, and so all players and teams were alerted and the league stopped. A decision was made by Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner to cancel the rest of the season. [Ref: 7-8]

At the time there was a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Division, with DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians all on 3-2. In the West, Houston Roughnecks (5-0) had a clear lead over the teams in joint second, Dallas Renegades and Los Angeles Wildcats (both 2-3). It also did better than the Alliance of American Football in drawing fans to a AAA Football League. The XFL averaged about 18,600 fans a game, whereas its predecessor, the AAF averaged about 15,000 during its one season in 2019. [Ref: 10][References: 4-11]
