Report

With the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic in full swing, the 2020 Japan Collegiate American Football Association was reduced to just the Kansai and Kanto Football Regions, themselves reduced to a series of Challenge Games and then knockouts. Kansai Division 1 Final was won by Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters 16-14 versus Ritsumeikan University Panthers and Kanto Region Division 1 Top 8 Final by Nihon University Phoenix 38-14 versus Sakuramibayashi.

The Koshien Bowl itself was won by Kwansei Gakuin University 42-24 and they became the last ever Student Representatives to take part in the Rice Bowl, the pinnacle of American Football in Japan, which for the first 36 years was a College All-Star game between Kanto (West) and Kansai (East) and then from 1984 to 2021 was between the Social Champions (X-League Corporate) and College Champions. From 2021 season (2022 Rice Bowl) onwards it shall be an X-League only game, the level of professionalism in that league being too strong for the College Champions.

The 2020 Kanto Collegiate Football Association was severely curtailed due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. with over half the Universities not competing, The Top 4 Divisions were split into 2 Blocks, each playing three matches with the Placement matches between the two first placed teams, two second placed teams and so on making up a short post-season. In Division 1 Top 8, Nihon University triumphed 38-14 in the Final against J. F. Oberlin University (University of Sakuramibayashi). They were then due to meet Kwansei Gakuin University for the Koshien Bowl (Japan Collegiate American Football Association title game).

Report

Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters won the 2019 Koshien Bowl in Japan’s College Football with a 38-28 victory over Waseda Big Bears in the Final match. They had earlier finished runners-up in the Kansai Collegiate American Football Association with a loss to Ritsumeikan Panthers in the Regular season, but made no mistake in the Playoffs, knocking out first Kyushu Champions Seinan Gakuin Green Dolphins 47-26 in the West Japan 2nd Round, before defeating two big Kansai rivals (Kobe Ravens and revenge over Ritsumeikan Panthers) in the West Japan Semi-Finals and Final.

Waseda University Big Bears had defeated North Japan Pine Bowl Champions Tohoku University Hornets 41-10 in the East Japan Bowl (Kanto v North Japan). The North Japan Bowl between the Tohoku Champions (Tohoku Hornets) and Hokkaido Champions (Hokkaido Big Green) had been a blowout (34-9 to Tohoku) as had the West Japan 1st Round match between Chukyo Eagles (Tokai Champions) and Chushikoku Champions Hiroshima Raccoons who were defeated 7-59. Chukyo then lost to Kobe Ravens in the West Japan 2nd Round. Kansai, being the biggest Association, gets three representatives in the College Playoffs.

Report

The Rice Bowl is the pinnacle of American Football in Japan, the first 36 editions were a University All-Star Game, between East and West with 24 wins for Kanto and 12 for Kansai [1].Beginning in 1984 it has was played between the winners of the University Championship and the winners of the X-Bowl (Social Championship). [1] During the Social v University Era it always took place on the 3rd of January. [2-3]

Recruit / Orbic Seagulls were the most succesful team in the Social v University Era, winning 7 Rice Bowls, and Fujitsu Frontiers second with 5 victories, and Matsushita Electric Works / Panasonic & winning four each. The most successful University sides have been Kyoto University Gangsters & Nihon University Phoenix with four apeice. The most finals appearances belongs to Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters with 13 appearances in total, although with only one victory, including 6 losses in the last 9 years. [2-3]

With Ritsumeikan University Panthers the last University team to win in 2009, and the risk to students, who are younger and less experienced than the X-League teams, all of whom would boast American Professional imports at star positions, the Rice Bowl became from 2021 onwards an X-League only Final.
