Report

The Irish Rugby Football Union introduced a knockout Top Four Playoff system to the All-Ireland League division 1 in 1998-99, with Cork Constitution becoming the first non-Limerick side to win the Division 1 title defeating Garrowen 14-11 in the Final, and then the following year St. Mary’s, from Rathmines in Dublin, became the first non-Munster club to win, triumphing 25-22 over Landsdowne in the 1999-2000 Final.

The 2000-01 season was cancelled following an outbreak of foot-in-mouth disease, and in 2001-02 Shannon won again, with Ballymena capturing a first league title for Ulster in 2002-03. Shannon won the three-in-a-row from 2003-04 to 2005-06, before Garryowen also won it for Limerick in 2006-07, with Cork Constitution keeping it in Munster in 2007-08. Shannon won on the first try rule after extra-tome in 2008-09.

For the 2009-10 season Division 1 was split into Divisions 1A and 1B.

Recap

Cathal Brugha from Belfast won the Irish Water Polo Association U19 National Cup in 1997 by defeating North Dublin 11-2 in the Final. The Cup was hosted in Claremorris, Co. Mayo for the first time, and the home team claimed the first ever win by a Connacht team at this level in Water Polo with a 7-5 victory over Grads, also of Belfast, in their Final Group B match.

Marian, from Dublin, won a tightly contested Group A ahead of Dublin’s Glenalbyn and Belfast’s Clonard. Group B was a four team Group with winners Cathal Brugha and runners-up North Dublin qualifying for the Semi-Finals ahead of Claremorris and Grads. Group C saw two runaway wins for St. Vincent’s of Glasnevin in Dublin, qualifying ahead of Belfast’s Setanta and Galway’s Corrib.

The Knockout Rounds showed Cathal Brugha to be well-deserving victors with a 14-5 defeat of Marian in the Semi-Finals and an 11-2 triumph in the Final versus North Dublin. North Dublin had knocked out St. Vincent’s 7-5 in an all-Northside Dublin match in the other Semi-Final.

ABOUT CAMANACHD ASSOCIATION SHINTY SENIOR LEAGUE B 2021

After a years break due to concerns around the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the Shinty Leagues are back in Scotland with the Premiership and National League condensed into three senior leagues of 6 teams each playing a 10 game schedule (double round-robin – home and away). There is no difference in playing level between the Senior A, Senior B and Senior C Leagues. The Senior C League for 2021 includes Premiership runners-up four years running from 2015 to 2018 Kyles Athletic .

ABOUT SHINTY

Shinty is Gaelic Scotland’s traditional version of Hurling. It is one of the forgotten Gaelic, Celtic or Atlantic Games like Basque Pelota and Welsh Baseball, played mostly in Gaelic parts of Scotland like the Highlands and Islands.

The game is very similar to Hurling, with a curved stick used to hit a ball through a goal, except there is no point-over-the-bar and less play in the air. The game is 12-a-side as opposed to Hurling’s 15-a-side. It is also known as Camanachd in Scottish Gaelic.

About Calcio Storico Fiorentino

Calcio Storico Fiorentino is a Renaissance Football game first played in Florence (Fiorentina), Tuscany in the 1400s by workers on breaks from work in the city. It was the first organised football in the world, rather than the Medieval mob football which preceeded it and where there were no rules or restrictions on numbers playing. It could be seen as part of the wider Renaissance whereby Tuscany’s ancient pre-Roman, pre-Catholic past was brought back. It is 27-a-side and played on sand in the Piazza di Santa Croce

*The Tuscan language (Etruscan) is one which predates the Latin arrival in the Italian peninsula, and even though the letters and sounds are known there is no knowledge of the word meanings as no document translating Etruscan to Latin or Greek has ever been found. It does, however, sound similar to Basque, and therefore could be incuded in the Celtic sports section as part of the “Atlantic” or “Black Atlantic” family along with the Celtic languages, Basque and Berber (Tamashek) – half the words in the Gaelic language are of an Indo-European origin (Greek, Latin, Germanic, Slavic etc)and half of a North African Afro-Asiatic origin (Berber, Tuareg, Maltese, Hebrew, Arab etc).

About Jugger

Jugger is like a cross between American Football and Medieval Combat. It is a team Sport where the objective is to get a skull from the middle of the field into a zone at the opposing teams end. There are five players on each team, four of whom are paired off fightning each other with padded weapons such as swords.

When a player is ‘killed’ in these fights he has to kneel down and is out of the game for that particular round. The Fifth person is the Qwick. His job is to get the skull from the middle of the field past the opposing Qwick into a zone at their opponents endzone. He can only advance the skull once the other teams fighters are all dead. The team which scores the most skull touchdowns is the winner. [References: 3]
