There were five different winners of the AFA over its seven seasons: San Antonio Charros (1997), Shreveport Steamers (1978), Jacksonville Firebirds (1979) and two-time winners West Virginia Rockets (1980-1981) and Carolina Storm (1982-1983).

The American Football Association was a AAA (Second Level) American Football League in between the World Football League (1974-1975) and the United States Football League (1983-1985). It operated from 1977-1983 mainly in the Southern States.

The USAFE (United States Air Force in Europe) Football league title was won on 10 occasions by Rhein-Main Rockets (Continental Sports Conference), Weisbaden Flyers (CSC) six times, Upper Heyford Sky Kings (United Kingdom Sports Conference) five times , Bitburg Barons (CSC) five times, Ramstein Rams (CSC) four times, London Rockets (UKSC) three times, Lakenheath Eagles (UKSC) twice and SHAPE Indians (Paris, France Sports Conference) twice.

Bentwaters Phantoms (UKSC), Chicksands Fighting Chicks (UKSC), Furstenfeldbruck Eagles (CSC), Landstuhl Raiders (CSC), Toul Tigers (FSC), Weathersfield Raiders (UKSC) each won the title once.

There were four Sports Conferences: United Kingdom, Continental, France and Mediterranean, although in the end the France and Mediterranean Sports Conferences were merged with the Continental Conference.

The United States Air Force in Europe Football League (USAFE – pronounced “You-Safe”) was the League for Air Force Personnel stationed at Cold War Military Bases in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy & Greece.

There were three Conferences: UK Sports Conference, Continental Sports Conference (German & France) and Mediterranean Sports Conference (Italy & Greece). While the MSC was a competitive Conference, the Finals were usually played between the Winners of the UKSC and the CSC.

Following the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s, the USAFE Football League was discontinued and the only US Military Football now played in the UK is High School Football at Lakenheath, London Central (High Wycombe), Alconbury & Menwith Hill. [1]

The United States ARmy EURope played a separate League (USAREUR). [6]

The Ramstein Rams, Alconbury Spartans, Burtonwood Bullets & Weathersfield Raiders all played matches in Ireland, including one at Croke Park in aid of the Irish Red Cross. [12-15]

How they Qualified:

First Army: 36th (Panther) division won 3-0 in a replay against First Army Corps

Second Army: After a marathon qualification series 7th (Hourglass) Division were declared Champions over the 28th (Keystone) Division based on Yards gained after the game finished level.

Third Army: the 89th (Rolling W) Division beat the 4th (Ivy) Division 14-0 in the Final.

S.O.S. Base Sections: Saint-Nazaire, the unofficial Champions of 1918, were given an automatic Playoff berth.

S.O.S. Intermediate Sections: SOS Tours won the Final 19-0 against SOS Base Section 2.

General Headquarters: GHQ Chaumont and GHQ Le Mans got the Final two Playoff births having played almost no Qualification games.

Report

The American Expeditionary Force, before heading home from World War I, played a series of morale-boosting games at the end of 1918 and first half of 1919.

In the Unofficial 1918 Championship, matches were played on Christmas Day & New Year’s Day deciding the Service of Supplies (SOS) and First Army Divisions Championships, with a Final following this on the 19th January 1919, which was won 12-0 by SOS Saint-Nazaire.

The following Spring (1919), the remaing Army men in France were not due to return home until July, so the General of the Armed Expeditionary Force, General John J. Persching, gave General Order 241, which stipulated the formation of sports Championships in American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Track & Field and Boxing. No one could not participate and the slogan was “Everybody in the game!”.

A budget of $1 Million (doubled to $2 Million by Washington) was made for uniforms – the Equivalent of $27 Million in 2014.

The Championships were organised in Qualifying Rounds for the Various Armies and Divisions, with Playoffs from Quarter-Finals onwards played at large Stadiums in Paris. A Total of 1, 335, 732 Football Players and Spectators took part in the Football Section, making it the Most popular, just ahead of boxing.

The Championship was won by the 89th (Rolling W) Division 14-6 over the 36th (Panther) Division.

These were among the earliest documented Football games in Europe, of the American Code.

From 1942-1943 the US Army played a series of American Football matches in Northern Ireland, Wales & England in aid of the Red Cross. Teams were named Tech (Engineering), Hale (Infantry) and Yarvard (Artillery).

Irish and British newspaper readers would have been familiar with reports in the papers of US College Football, and the team names reflect this (Yarvard and Hale are not mis-spellings, but the names reflect the Ivy League Colleges of Harvard and Yale, similarly Tech is a nod to the big American Tech Colleges.

Starting in Northern Ireland in 1942, matches were played at the home of Ulster Rugby, Ravenhill (Hale winning 9-7) and Larne (Yarvard getting a 14-0 win over Tech). 8, 000 turned up to see the Ravenhill game, and a full capacity 2,000 for the Larne match.

The next year, the European Theater of Operations Championship was organised in England & Wales, with the teams given the nicknames Fighting Irish (Tech – a nod to Notre Dame), Blue Devils (Hale – after Duke University) and Crimson Tide (Yarvard – in honour of Alabama University).

The Crimson Tide won all three matches played in front of the public, attracting crowds of 25,000 (London), 7, 000 (Cardiff), and 6, 000 (Bristol).

Autumn 1943 is notable for the appearance of the Bulldozers, an African-American Engineering team.

In 1944 Army & Navy (not the US Colleges, but Army & Navy Personnel stationed in Europe), played a 0-0 Tie in Newry, dubbed the Northern Ireland Championship. Navy were nicknamed the Galloping Gaels for the day.

There were also numerous Championships for various Divisions as well as two Army-Navy Grid Classics and Two Tea Bowls and a Coffee Bowl in 1944 as the tide turned on the war and opportunities for playing in large stadiums for the benefit of both the Red Cross and the citizens of Britain increased.

An interesting footnote to this era is the very first American Football game played in Africa, the Arab Bowl, played in Oran, Algeria, which Army won 10-7 over Navy.

Sioux Falls Storm shocked the previously unbeaten Arizona Rattlers 56-53 in the United Bowl to win their 10th United Bowl, extending their record.

Arizona had finished 14-0 in Regular Season play, and Iowa Barnstormers 12-2 in second. Sioux Falls beat both of these one-time AAA Arena Football League teams on the way to the title after winning against Tucson Sugar Skulls (50-47) in the First Round Playoffs.

The United Conference Championship game was also extremely close, with the Storm beating Nebraska Danger 52-50. In the Intense Conference Championship Arizona Rattlers had beaten Nebraska Danger 62-45. Nebraska had earlier beaten Green Bay Blizzard 45-40 in the Playoffs.

Six of the 10 teams made the playoffs, with Quad Cities Steamwheelers just missing out of a spot in the post-season with a 6-8 record. Bismarck Bucks (2-12), Cedar Rapids River Kings (1-13) and San Diego Strike Force (1-13) won a total of 4 games between them.

The first domestic Italian American Football League was the Northern Italian Football League , started in 1976, following the first unsuccessful attempts at introducing Pro American Football to Europe in 1973-1975, with the Intercontinental Football League, which was to feature NFL players, and six teams in Europe, including the Rome Gladiators in Italy.

The Northern Italian Football League was started in 1976, with Vicenza teams Geronimos & Blue Knights dominating play, winning all the Spaghetti Bowls between them and finishing in the top two spots in the Regular Season most years.

The FIFA (Federazione Italiano Football Americano) association was set up the following year, in 1977, with a four-team National Playoff.

In 1980, the second attempt at starting a true National League was founded – the Lega Italiana Football Americano. It lasted one and a half seasons, with the second season finishing at the midway point. Lupi Roma won the first title in 1980 and Gladiatori Roma were the leaders at the halfway point in the second season. The rival Associazone Italiana Football Americano, which played its first season in 1981 took over thereafter.

The Italian League was the first domestic American Football League in Europe, with the game being restricted to US Army men playing at Air Force bases in Europe prior to that. The film M*A*S*H had popularised American Football in Europe in 1970, the first time the game had been seen on screen in Europe in a Major Film. About

The Intercontinental Football League was the National Football League’s first attempt at starting Professional Football outside North America.

It started after the film M*A*S*H became a worldwide hit in 1970, with its’ climactic ball game between the 4077th and 325th EVAC. There was enough interest for people to start clubs, and in 1973 Bob Kap, who had introduced professional Soccer to sceptical Texans, decided to try and sell Professional American Football to Europeans. He had enough interest in 1973 to have sold six franchises. One of the investors, Bruno Beneck, of Rome, had successfully introduced Baseball to Italy and was willing to do the same with American Football. He was also director of ‘Domenica Sportiva’, which was Italy’s most popular TV Sports Show.

The World Football League had started up in the USA, with the aim of bringing American Football to the world, and the NFL felt it had nothing to lose, and plenty to gain. It felt it could do business with the Intercontinental League, and had already played a game featuring 42 NFLers in Paris, France. NFL Bleu had beaten NFL Rouge 16-6 that day. Players were to be loaned out to the Intercontinental Football League, with each IFL team paired with one of the six NFL divisions. Sponsorship was found from Pan American Airlines, which would fly the players over.

Teams were also to be paired with NCAA Colleges for the development of players before the played in the NFL. Notre Dame, would be paired with Rome Gladiators, there being no Irish team in the IFL. There were to be two divisions, most likely North (Germany & Austria) and South (Rome, Barcelona & Istanbul), playing a 4-game schedule within their own division, followed by a two-game aggregate score final between the two division winners, to be played over May & June 1974.

However, the oil crisis, and subsequent inflation, and the spectre of domestic terrorism in Europe, from the Red Brigades and Baader-Meinhof Gang, meant the proposed league never got off the ground, following talks with persons in Washington. The final blow, however, was the financial problems of the main sponsor, Pan American Airlines, which pulled out of the project. A Final meeting in Honolulu on March 21, 1975 put an end to the league.

Beneck, however, wasn’t to be deterred, and continued promoting the game in Italy, with the first leagues there starting in 1974 among US Soldiers and then domestic Italian teams in 1976, including the Rome Gladiators. By then the IFL had already played its first game, the St. Louis Cardinals had beaten the San Diego Chargers 20-10.

Later IFL Tours were organised between College Teams for the European Championship in 1976, and Semi-Pro Teams from the Mid-West in 1977, and 1978. Texas A&I Javelinas of the NAIA won all 5 contests in 1976; Newton Nite Hawks, of the Chicagoland League, similarly won all five matches in 1977; and Quad Cities Black Hawks (Moline, East Moline & Rock Island, Illinois & Davenport, Iowa) of the Northern States Football League beat Indianapolis Capitols 4-0 in the 1978 series.

For American Football in Europe, it was only the beginning.

The Memphis Tigers played an independent schedule which included matches against NFL opposition

They beat undefeated NFL champions Green Bay Packers in 1929, by a score of 20-6, and also beat the Chicago Bears the following week. They also beat the Portsmouth Spartans, who would become the Detroit Lions, and the Brooklyn Dodgers, who left the NFL for the AFL in the 1940s.

In 1934 they would join the American Football League, playing in one of the Major League rivals to the NFL to use that name.
