About

The Intercontinental Football League was the National Football League’s first attempt at starting Professional Football outside North America.

It started after the film M*A*S*H became a worldwide hit in 1970, with its’ climactic ball game between the 4077th and 325th EVAC. There was enough interest for people to start clubs, and in 1973 Bob Kap, who had introduced professional Soccer to sceptical Texans, decided to try and sell Professional American Football to Europeans. He had enough interest in 1973 to have sold six franchises. One of the investors, Bruno Beneck, of Rome, had successfully introduced Baseball to Italy and was willing to do the same with American Football. He was also director of ‘Domenica Sportiva’, which was Italy’s most popular TV Sports Show.

The World Football League had started up in the USA, with the aim of bringing American Football to the world, and the NFL felt it had nothing to lose, and plenty to gain. It felt it could do business with the Intercontinental League, and had already played a game featuring 42 NFLers in Paris, France. NFL Bleu had beaten NFL Rouge 16-6 that day. Players were to be loaned out to the Intercontinental Football League, with each IFL team paired with one of the six NFL divisions. Sponsorship was found from Pan American Airlines, which would fly the players over.

Teams were also to be paired with NCAA Colleges for the development of players before the played in the NFL. Notre Dame, would be paired with Rome Gladiators, there being no Irish team in the IFL. There were to be two divisions, most likely North (Germany & Austria) and South (Rome, Barcelona & Istanbul), playing a 4-game schedule within their own division, followed by a two-game aggregate score final between the two division winners, to be played over May & June 1974.

However, the oil crisis, and subsequent inflation, and the spectre of domestic terrorism in Europe, from the Red Brigades and Baader-Meinhof Gang, meant the proposed league never got off the ground, following talks with persons in Washington. The final blow, however, was the financial problems of the main sponsor, Pan American Airlines, which pulled out of the project. A Final meeting in Honolulu on March 21, 1975 put an end to the league.

Beneck, however, wasn’t to be deterred, and continued promoting the game in Italy, with the first leagues there starting in 1974 among US Soldiers and then domestic Italian teams in 1976, including the Rome Gladiators. By then the IFL had already played its first game, the St. Louis Cardinals had beaten the San Diego Chargers 20-10.

Later IFL Tours were organised between College Teams for the European Championship in 1976, and Semi-Pro Teams from the Mid-West in 1977, and 1978. Texas A&I Javelinas of the NAIA won all 5 contests in 1976; Newton Nite Hawks, of the Chicagoland League, similarly won all five matches in 1977; and Quad Cities Black Hawks (Moline, East Moline & Rock Island, Illinois & Davenport, Iowa) of the Northern States Football League beat Indianapolis Capitols 4-0 in the 1978 series.

For American Football in Europe, it was only the beginning.

The Memphis Tigers played an independent schedule which included matches against NFL opposition

They beat undefeated NFL champions Green Bay Packers in 1929, by a score of 20-6, and also beat the Chicago Bears the following week. They also beat the Portsmouth Spartans, who would become the Detroit Lions, and the Brooklyn Dodgers, who left the NFL for the AFL in the 1940s.

In 1934 they would join the American Football League, playing in one of the Major League rivals to the NFL to use that name.

Report

In the Winter of January-February 1927 & 1928, some of the top teams in the National Football League & American Football League played in a Winter League in California, following the end of the Fall (Autumn) NFL & AFL seasons. The teams included star players from college teams in California and were dubbed after the teams’ star NFL & AFL players. e.g. the Nevers Eskimoes were the Duluth Eskimoes of the NFL with star player, Ernie Nevers.

While the best team both seasons, the Los Angeles Wildcats, dubbed Wilson’s Wildcats by the press, were not to play in the season ending game, as they did not provide the draw the organisers wanted. Instead Red Grange’s Yankees played both climactic games, first against Muller’s Californians and in 1928, winning at the second attempt versus Friedman’s Bulldogs.

The League was essentially a AAA League/Major League Rival to the NFL from 1927-1928, featuring both star NFL & AFL teamxs and players and teams and players from the Semi-Pro Pacific Coast Football League and Californian College players.

Report

The XFL continued to play behind closed doors through the coronavirus outbreak, which stopped a lot of sports leagues. It finally shut up shop on March 12 after a Seattle Dragons player had tested positive for coronavirus, after the game with Houston Roughnecks on March 7. This player had also participated in the February 29th game against St. Louis Battlehawks, and so all players and teams were alerted and the league stopped. A decision was made by Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner to cancel the rest of the season. [Ref: 4-5]

At the time there was a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Division, with DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians all on 3-2. In the West, Houston Roughnecks (5-0) had a clear lead over the teams in joint second, Dallas Renegades and Los Angeles Wildcats (both 2-3). It also did better than the Alliance of American Football in drawing fans to a AAA Football League. The XFL averaged about 18,600 fans a game, whereas its predecessor, the AAF averaged about 15,000 during its one season in 2019. [Ref: 7]

About

The XFL 2020 is the second incarnation of Vince McMahon’s rival Pro Football League to the National Football League and Canadian Football League.

He started the original XFL in 2001 after being refused a license for a CFL team, and sought to bring Football back to its Hard-Working Class roots. At the time the NFL was starting to cut down on touchdown celebrations and bring in more laws protecting the quarterback, and was called the “No Fun League” by its detractors. Vince McMahon named all of the teams in the original XFL after criminals or extreme mental illnesses, and brought in hard-hitting rules, that aimed to bring the hard-nosed element among the working classes back into the game, by making it more like the Football of a century previously.

The original XFL, however, failed to bring in an audience, as it was seen as deviating too much from the standard rules of football. [Ref: 7]

This version of the XFL promises closer rules to the NFL, and has still used extreme names, just not criminal, or mentally ill.

While it positions itself as a Major League rival to the NFL & CFL, it can be thought of as more of a AAA Football League.

Report

There was no League season on the West Coast from 1936-1937, with the Salinas Packers playing an independent schedule. In 1936 they defeated the Los Angeles Bulldogs of the AFL 21-17, and Wisconsin Cardinals 61-0. The Packers played against the Brooklyn Dodgers of the NFL in 1936, losing 18-0 and also the Green Bay Packers (NFL Champions) who won 42-7. [1]

In 1937 the Salinas Packers played three AFL teams: Los Angeles Bulldogs (Later that season AFL Champions), losing 0-13, two victory over the Rochester Tigers (25-0) and (7-3), and the Boston Shamrocks (Salinas beat the defending AFL Champions 41-0). The Bulldogs won two December games against the Packers, leaving a 3-0 sweep for the LA team on the West Coast in 1937. [2]

In 1938 Pro League Football returned to the West Coast, with the California Football League, featuring the Salinas Packers, as well as fellow San Fernando Valley teams the Fresno Crushers & Stockton Shippers, who won the title. There were also teams in Oakland (Cardinals) and Hollywood (Stars), giving the League a Major League feel to it, although it was more AAA in status.

Report

The Pacific Coast Pro Football League of 1934-1935 paved the way for the AAA Pacific Coast Pro Football League of 1940-1948, which from 1943-1945 was a Major League Rival to the NFL on the West Coast.

The PCPFL of the 1930s itself could boast AAA status in 1935, when the Los Angeles Maroons, Hollywood Braves & California Shamrocks vied with the Westwood Cubs for the Championship.

The Del Rey / California Shamrocks were clearly marketed to the Irish Community on the West Coast but had little success, failing to win a game in its two seasons. [1]

Report

The interest in Football in Ashland & Middletown communities in Kentucky led the Armco Manufacturing Company to fund the creation of two Football teams, playing against semi-pro opposition in the Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia area such as the NFL’s Portsmouth Spartans, Canton Bulldogs, Dayton Triangles & Ironton Tanks.

The Portsmouth team would one day move to Detroit becoming the Lions, and are still in existence and the Indianapolis Colts team can be traced back to the Triangles, although the NFL only officially includes the record of the 1953 Colts onwards. Canton, Ohio, is famous as the birthplace of Pro Football, and is where the Pro Football Hall of Fame is based.

Players were employed by Armco and drew large crowds. Ashland won 6 of the 8 games between the two Armco teams.

Ashland’s schedule from 1926 included the following: Canton Bulldogs, Cincinnati Guards, Cincinnati Potters, Cleveland Panthers, Columbus Tigers, Dayton Koors, Dayton Triangles, Ft. Wayne Pyramids, Ironton Tanks, Kokomo Legion, Middletown Armco Blues, Portsmouth Spartans & West Virginia Wildcats.

Middletown’s Schedule included: Akron Awnings, Ashland Armco, Chillicothe Eagles, Cincinnati National Guard, CAC of Cincinnati, Cleveland Indians, Dayton Koors, Dayton Triangles, Hamilton Legion, Bobbs-Chevrolet of Indianapolis, Ironton Tanks, Kokomo Legion, Louisville CAC, Muncie Flyers, Portsmouth Spartans, Portsmouth Presidents, Springfield All Stars, Toledo Police, & Wabash.

Former College players on the roster of Middletown included those with Irish names: Don O’Brien (Purdue), Forest McGuire (Swathmore), Earl Sullivan (St. Xavier).Jim McMillan (Purdue).
