About Arena Indoor Football

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulties  in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there are Rebound Nets in Arena Football either side of the goalposts, allowing the ball to return into play, which are not present in Indoor Football.

Ian Jones, born in Cork, was appointed Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Houston Texans in 2017. He started doing voluntary work, mostly coaching in the GAA while still in College in 2010, where he was Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with Cork GAA (Official) and one other coach, Mark Kilgallon, who is now Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the AFL’s Sydney Swans, saw potential, and got him an Internship at the University of South Carolina, using his contacts with Craig Fitzgerald, whom he had worked with at Harvard University in the mid-2000s.

He worked 12 Hours a Day at USC, seven days a week, 8 hours each day coaching the Football Team.
[1] After two summers at USC he moved on to London Welsh Rugby Union team, and his first Professional Contract. he was surprised at how low-level the set-up was. They had just been promoted to the Premiership, but the budget was small compared the Colleges in the USA, where Stsdiums can seat 110,000 people and there are massively successful alumni who can fund the College Programmes. He decided to phone Fitzgerald again and tell him it was not working out and secured a contract with Penn State College Football Team.

He stayed for three years at Penn State coaching the University’s Football Team as well as being involved in Coaching 30 other sports during his time there, including the College Rugby Team, and the USA Women’s Rugby Squad which also had s base there. While involved with the USA Women’s Rugby Team he got to go to Canadaon Tour with the, and also travel to Wales, England and the World Cup in france in 2014. . By now Fitzgerald had moved on to become a Coach at the Houston Texans. Jones ended up taking a low level position with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, and from there went on to the Houston Texans in 2017, after Fitzgerald called him up when a position became vacant. [1]

At the Texans a typical day stated at 3 A.M. the S&C Staff train at 3:45 AM, At 6 AM they Preview the Day and set up the Weight Room. At 7 AM they train the 30-or-so Rookies (First Year Players). At 8 AM they have a team meeting and 8:30 AM the S&C staff meet for injury/rehab reports. 9 AM they train the five Long Snappers, Kickers and Punters. 10 AM is full practice – Three Hours Long. At 1 PM until 3 PM the non-Rookies are trained individually, staggerred, before they move off to their own individual training. After that it calms down – they eat, review what needs to be done in the Weightroom, look at data from Practice. at 5 or 6 PM another full team meeting and at 7 PM a Final walk-through for the Day. Once the meetings are finished around 8 or 9 PM, that’s the day done. [1]

From the Texans he took up the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Salt Lake Stalions, of the Alliance of American Football, a AAA American Football League, the equivalent of Championship in English Soccer, and from July 2019 to July 2020 was Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance at Wagner College, Staten Island, New York, a multi-sports NCAA College programme position. In December 2019 he took up the position of Head StrengthConditioning Coach at Rugby United in New York, and also the role of Strength and Conditioning Consultant. From June 2018 to August 2020 he was also Head of Physical Performance of USA Rugby and at the same time Physical Performance Consultant. [References: 33-35]

Report – General

A total of 32 teams played in Major Rival Football Leagues to the National Football League in 2020. With the Canadian Football League cancelling the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic, it was left to the XFL, Liga de Futbol Americano Mexico, The Spring League and Liga Xtrema de Futbol Arena Mexico to compete with the NFL. Only The Spring League, however, would complete its two seasons, the Spring season in Las Vegas with only three teams playing a total of two matches each, won by Las Vegas Hughes, and the Fall Season, in San Antonio, with the only Championship game played: Generals triumphing 37-14 over Aviators. LEXFA Mexico only completed its short Spring Season, and cancelled its full-length Fall season, and both the XFL and LFA Mexico abandoned their seasons after five weeks of a 10 week season.

The 2020 Canadian Football League season was cancelled due to concerns over the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. [References: 1-3]

Report – XFL 2020

XFL Logo [References: 11]

The XFL continued to play behind closed doors through the coronavirus outbreak, which stopped a lot of sports leagues. It finally shut up shop on March 12 after a Seattle Dragons player had tested positive for coronavirus, after the game with Houston Roughnecks on March 7. This player had also participated in the February 29th game against St. Louis Battlehawks, and so all players and teams were alerted and the league stopped. A decision was made by Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner to cancel the rest of the season. [Ref: 7-8]

At the time there was a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Division, with DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians all on 3-2. In the West, Houston Roughnecks (5-0) had a clear lead over the teams in joint second, Dallas Renegades and Los Angeles Wildcats (both 2-3). It also did better than the Alliance of American Football in drawing fans to a AAA Football League. The XFL averaged about 18,600 fans a game, whereas its predecessor, the AAF averaged about 15,000 during its one season in 2019. [Ref: 10][References: 4-11]

In the third week the Conquerors shocked the Aviators with a 42-19 victory against the undefeated team, giving the Conquerors their first win of the season. Report

Scotland’s Grangemouth Broncos failed to find the form which saw them win the NFL UK Schools Flag Football Championships, when they lost all three matches in the NFL Europe Schools Flag Football Championships in 2002. They narrowly lost the opening game 43-38 to Spain’s Pere Vives Vich, and then lost 38-18 to hosts Dusseldorf Black Hawk and 45-21 to Leonardo Lightning of Netherlands when a win could have seen them through on head-to-head points difference.

Dusseldorf Black Hawk won the NFL Europe Group and met EFAF Group Champions Austria’s Air Force Graz in the Final, with the Austrians coming out on top 42-18. Air Force Graz were convincing winners of the tournament having depatched AS Paris Flag 26-22 in their opening match before getting into their stride with huge 60 plus points wins over Sondervanfskloen of Denmark and Kulosaari Roosters of Finland to rech the Final. The two finalists qualified for the NFL Schools Flag Football World Championships along with third placed Leonardo Lightning who won 46-40 in overtime in the third placed playoff match against AS Paris Flag.

Grangemouth is Scotland’s biggest port, having been founded as the finish point of the Clyde-Forth Canal. Located near Falkirk in East Scotland, it is famous also for the art-statues of the two Kelpies, mythological Horses which can take Human form from Celtic Folklore. The artist who created the two giant artworks at the entrance to thde Helix Park, however, took ins;piration more from the two work horses which drew each canal boat. Scotland was colonised by Gaelic-speakers from Ireland in 500 AD, although Gaelic is now only widely spoken in the Highlands and Western Isles.

About Fan Controlled Football

The League was a novel idea, giving fans the chance to be a part-owner, and coach of a Professional Arena Indoor Football Team. The FCF was 7v7 Arena style Football with no kicking. Teams start at the 10-yard line and drive to the endzone. The extra point is 1v1 between the Wide Receiver and the Defensive Back. All Games are 1 Hour long with a running clock, and the games were streamed live on twitch where the owner/coaches could vote on the plays of their team, whichever play voted highest was the one that was played.
