Report

Steve Miller caught a spectacular touchdown catch in the dying seconds of the first half to complete a perfect season for the Crawley Raiders. The touchdown and two-point conversion were the only scores of the JGL Youth Bowl in 1994.

The Raiders had finished top of the five-team League, with the Kent Panthers aalso qualifying for the Bowl in second place. Other teams were Brighton B-52s, London Olympians, and 1993 runners-up Park Centre Bandits.

The Junior Gridiron League Youth League was a Two Touch League for 15-18 year olds in the South of England. Two Touch was a variation on Flag Football whereby the ball carrier was tackled by placing two hands on him or her.

The St. Joseph’s Cardinals won the Northern Junior Gridiron League in 1994 defeating Doncaster Wildcats 16-12 thanks to two long touchdown runs by Michael Jones (65 yards) James Roberts (41 yards). Their first match was declared a 6-6 tie by League management after Daniel O’Shaughnessey’s Overtime winner for the Cardinals was declared void as no overtime should have been played.

The Cardinals were a team from St. Joseph’s Primary School in St. Helens, Birkenhead, Merseyside.

The Northern Junior Gridiron League Junior League was a Two Touch League for 8-11 year olds in the North of England. Two Touch was a variation on Flag Football whereby the ball carrier was tackled by placing two hands on him or her.

Report

The British Collegiate American Football League underwent rapid expansion between 1990 and 1994, with the 16 teams becoming 26, and the old 3 Conference / 4 Division system scrapped in favour of two Conferences: Northern and Southern, with the Confererence Champions meeting in the College Bowl.

In 1991-92 the only changes in the Northern Conference were the addition of the Leeds Celtics and Newcastle changing their name to Mariners. In the Southern Conference, two new colleges were added: ASton Rhinos and Cambridge Pythons. Strathclyde, Leeds, Warwick and Leicester were the defeated playoff contenders, while the two Conference Champions met in College Bowl V with Teesside Demons defeating East Anglia Pirates 19-0.

The Newcastle Mariners were replaced by the Lancaster Bombers in the North for 1991-92, with the South adding Oxford Cavaliers, making a Varsity Football Match between the two Colleges possible for the first time, as in Rugby Union, Soccer and other sports. Conference Champions were Teesside Demons and Southampton Stags, with Glasgow shocking Leeds in the Northern Conference Final, and Southampton Stags, easily the best team all year disposing of Loughborough Aces in the Southern Final. The College Bowl VI was a 53-0 win for the Stags as they destroyed the Tigers with Running Backs Eustice Fontaine and Alan Rodney doing most of the damage scoring-wise and their defense shutting out yet another team (they let in only 12 points all year, scoring 320 in the process). Coach Andy Capp claimed after the game, with some justification, that they had raised the level of College Football in Britain in 1991-92.

After an exuberant display in College Bowl VI, the Stags set about defending their title against the biggest field yet: 26 teams in total entered the British Collegiate American Football League in 1992-93, with newcomers Sheffield Zulus, Newcastle Mariners (back after one season out) and Sunderland Wearwolves in the North, and Tarrannau Aberystwyth (Welsh for Thunder), Bath Killer Bees, Staffordshire Stallions, Birmingham Lions and Bristol Bullets in the South. The Stags were in even more dominant form during the Regular Season, amassing 377 points and letting in none on the field (just one 1-1 declared tie blemishing their record) as they won the Southern Conference title with ease. Glasgow Tigers won the Northern Conference title, although not in as much dominant form, but lost the Northern Conference Final to Leeds Celtics in a shock results. The Southampton Stags had their most difficult day of the year in the Southern Conference Final, conceding their first points of the year as they defeated Cambridge Pythons 14-8 and then disposed of Leeds Celtics 19-0 in the Final, with Free Safety Anthony Thompson earning the MVP Award, intercepting four Leeds Celtics passes in College Bowl VIII.

There were no new teams in 1993-94 and with much of their squads graduated, Southampton Stags failed to make the Playoffs. The Conference titles went to Cardiff Cobras and Glasgow Tigers, and after some near misses the Glasgow Tigers made no mistake in College Bowl IX, triumphing 26-0 over surprise package Leicester Lemmings who had knocked out Cardiff Cobras in the first round of the Playoffs.

For 1994-95 another round of expansion saw the league increase to 29 teams, meaning a restructure was needed, and the two conferences were split into three divisions of five each (with the exception of one division of four)

Report

The first British Collegiate American Football League season took place in 1985-86 with four teams playing a round-robin competition. Hull sharks won the title with a 5-0 record (Newcastle Scholars played a half schedule). Teeside Demons and Manchester MPs were the other Universities.

In 1986-87 they were joined by Leicester Lemmings and three Scottish Colleges: Strathclyde Hawks, Stirling Clansmen and Glasgow Tigers. There were two Conferences: Northern and Scottish, with Hull Sharks (the Northern Champion) defeating Newcastle Scholars (the Scottish Champion) 23-6 in College Bowl I.

In 1987-88 the BCAFL added a Southern Conference with Reading Knights, UEA (East Anglia) Pirates and Cardiff Cobras joining the League. Hull Sharks, Stirling Clansmen and Cardiff Cobras were the respective Conference Champions.

There was no increase in team membership for 1988-89 as Loughborough aces replaced Manchester MPs. Hull Sharks, Stirling Clansmen and Loughborough Aces were the Conference Champions, and Hull Sharks squeaked by Cardiff Cobras (the Wildcard Qualifier) 7-6 in College Bowl III.

There was a big increase in membership of the BCAFL in 1989-90, with Paisley Panthers joining the Scottish Conference and Sheffield Pirates joining the Northern Conference. There were enough additions to the Southern Conference (three: Warwick Wolves, Birmingham Lions and Southampton Stags) to necessitate the creation of two divisions within the Conference: Western and Eastern. Teeside Demons, Strathclyde Hawks, Warwick Wolves and Birmingham Lions won their respective divisions or conferences, and College Bowl IV was again decided by a missed Point After Touchdown (Conversion) as Teeside Demons triumphed 21-20 over Birmingham Lions.

Report

The National Passball League in England expanded to 11 teams for 1992, with the Cannock Chase Giants winning 30-29 in one Semi-Final against St. Helens Cardinals. Defending Champions Thunderbolts defeated Snappy Snap Gators 41-39 in another close Semi-Final, but a League investigation was launched into whether they should be allowed play in the Final after it was alleged they had kitted-up more than the 18 players allowed on gameday.

About Passball

The National Passball League was an Arena-style American Football League in the England, played on a smaller field than a regular American Football field, and with a focus on passing (Passball is played on a 40-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, with five downs or attempts to score, three of which must be passing plays, before the ball is turned over). It is seven-a-side.
