CANADIAN RUGBY UNION 1898-1906

In 1898 the Canadian Rugby Union adopted a Divisional format with a set game schedule and playoffs for the first time. Initially three divisions: Onatrio Rugby Football Union, Quebec Rugby Football Union and Canadian Intercollegiate Union, they were joined in 1902 by the Manitoba Rugby Football Union. In 1907 the Canadian Rugby Union introduced the Alberta Rugby Football Union and in 1909 the first Grey Cup, donated by Earl Grey was played. Irish involvement during this era included the Winnipeg Shamrocks in 1903 and 1905 and Ottawa St. Patrick College in 1906

1887 CANADIAN RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

The 1887 Canadian Rugby Football Union (Canadian Football) Senior Chamionship was for the fourth year in a row decided between the Ontario Rugby Football Union Champions and the Quebec Rugby Football Union Champions. The QRFU was a two-game playoff involving three teams, while the ORFU season was again a League Final between the City Champions and College Champions, with the College Championship involving three teams (three less than in 1886) and the City Championship involving three rounds of matches between five teams, one less than in the previous year. There would be no Canadian Senior Championship from 1888 to 1891 as the ORFU and QRFU played separate Championships with no Playoff between them.
