About Canadian Football

The 12v12 version of the game played in Canada differs from American Football not only in the number of players allowed on the field at any one time (12 in a Canadian Football team versus 11 in an American Football team), but also in the size of the field (a Canadian Football field is 110 yards long with two 20-yard endzones, while an American Football field is 100 yards long with two 15 yard endzones). Canadian Football teams also have only three downs (attempts) in which to gain 10 yards or the ball is turned over as opposed to four downs in American Football. There is also the possibility of scoring a “Rouge” in Canadian Football – this happens when the ball is kicked through the back of the endzone, and is worth one point.

Report

Arizona Rattlers and Tampa Bay Storm were the most successful Arena Football League team, winning the Arena Bowl a record fives times each. Other multiple winners of the Arena Bowl were San Jose SaberCats (4), Detroit Drive (4), Philadelphia Soul (3) and Orlando Predators (2). Single-time winners of the Bowl were Denver Dynamite (the first in 1987), Albany Empire (the last in 2019), Albany Firebirds, Grand Rapids Rampage, Colorado Crush, Chicago Rush, Jacksonville Sharks, Spokane Shock and Washington Valor.

The Arena Football League was the most successful of the Alternatives to the National Football League since the American Football League of 1960 to 1969. It played 32 seasons since its first official season in 1987, with one season (2009) cancelled. The Final Arena Bowl was played in 2019.

About Arena / Indoor Football

This version of American (or Gridiron) Football has become extremely popular in Mexico.

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulties  in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football & Indoor Football is the rebound nets either side of the goalposts in Arena Football, which is the only part of the original patent given to the Arena Football League in 1989, that a subsequent ruling in 1998 ruled was copyright, the rest being Football already in other leagues.

Report

Michigan Panthers defeated Philadelphia Stars 24-22 in the 1983 USFL Championship Game, but the Stars were to win the only two other USFL Championships: 23-3 against the Arizona Wranglers in 1984 and 28-24 as the Baltimore Stars in 1985, triumphing over the Oakland Invaders.

The 1960s, 1970s and 1980s were the heyday of Rival Major Football Leagues to the National Football League. Not only did the American Football League of 1960 to 1969 become so successful that it forced a merger with the NFL, so that there is now a Super Bowl between the AFL and NFL Champions (since the 1970 merger AFC and NFC). The United States Football League was the third such league after the World Football League of 1974-1975. Styling itself the “Outlaw League” it had team names such as Houston Gamblers, Arizona Wranglers, Portland Breakers and San Antonio Gunslingers.

The United States Football League put teams in cities that did not have NFL teams, and played a Spring Schedule, which gave it an edge when looking for fans on seats in stadiums, however, it was locked out of Television Contracts by the NFL, which was proven in an anti-trust action taken by the USFL against the NFL. However, the League was only awarded €1 in compensation by the courts, and folded in its third season, making the mistake off going head-to-head with the NFL in the autumn, an idea of Donald Trump, owner of the New Jersey Generals, and President of the United States of America from 2016 to 2020.

Report

The Ohio League, while not a formal league, was the top Professional American Football League from 1903 to 1919, and the first to openly pay its players. Teams scheduled matches against both other Ohio teams and teams from other States. Bob Nash, who was born in Collinstown, Co. Meath, Ireland, played End and Tackle for the Massillon Tigers from 1917 to 1919. Masillon were one of the top teams in the League and vied for the Championship most seasons with Shelby Blues and Canton Bulldogs.

In 1920, with rising wage costs due to players continually jumping from one team to another across state lines, the top four teams in Ohio, along with the top teams in Upstate New York, New York City , New York / New Jersey and Pennsylvania Leagues joined forces to form the American Professional Football Association, which in 1922 changed its name to the National Football League. The importance of the Ohio League is noted by the National Football League in its’ placing of the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Report

Los Angeles Xtreme won the XFL Championship Game – the Million Dollar Game – in 2001, triumphing 38-6 over San Francisco Demons. There were eight teams in the inaugural season of the XFL, five of them in cities without NFL teams: Los Angeles Xtreme, Birmingham Bolts, Orlando Rage, Memphis Maniax and Las Vegas Outlaws.

The XFL of 2001 was the brainchild of Vince McMahon of the World Wrestling Entertainment, who was refused a license to buy a Canadian Football League team, and instead decided to bankroll his own league. He gained a Television contract with NBC which had lost the rights to show the NFL, and initially, amid much hype the first weeks rating were good, but slid rapidly before the league went out of existence after one season.

The reasons given for this were numerous – there was too much variation on standard Football Rules, the team names were too violent, referencing either criminality or extreme mental states. The cheerleaders were too much like strippers rather compared with the NFL’s cheerleaders. The League was intended to give fans back Hard Working Class Football as had been seen to have disappeared from the NFL, but the XFL was seen as being too hard, more criminally insane than Working Class, according to First Down, a British American Football Newspaper.

2014 was the first year of the Postseason Playoff in NCAA Division 1 College Football. The four Conference Champions with the best records from the “Power 5” Conferences: Atlantic Coast, Big 10, Southeastern, Big 12 and Pacific-12 were invited to play in the College Football Playoff Semi-Finals, which were for the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, with the winners meeting in the National Chmpionship. Ohio State Buckeyes won the National Championship 42-20 over Oregon Ducks.

About

The Alliance of American Football was a AAA (2nd Level) American Football League, which unusually for the time, managed to start the season, although it filed for bankruptcy after 8 of ten weeks, with Orlando Apollos (7-1) and Birmingham Iron (5-3) in the Eastern Conference, and San Antonio Commanders (5-3) and Arizona Hotshots (5-3) in the Western Coference, in Playoff spots.

Its’ place as a AAA Alternative to the National Football League was taken in 2020 by the second incarnation of the XFL. There was also failed attempts in 2020 to start Major League Football and the Freedom Football League. Ian Jones, who was born in Cork, Ireland, was Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Salt Lake Stallions in the AAF in 2019.

Ian Jones, born in Cork, was appointed Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach at the Houston Texans in 2017. He started doing voluntary work, mostly coaching in the GAA while still in College in 2010, where he was Head Strength & Conditioning Coach with Cork GAA (Official) and one other coach, Mark Kilgallon, who is now Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the AFL’s Sydney Swans, saw potential, and got him an Internship at the University of South Carolina, using his contacts with Craig Fitzgerald, whom he had worked with at Harvard University in the mid-2000s.

He worked 12 Hours a Day at USC, seven days a week, 8 hours each day coaching the Football Team.
[1] After two summers at USC he moved on to London Welsh Rugby Union team, and his first Professional Contract. he was surprised at how low-level the set-up was. They had just been promoted to the Premiership, but the budget was small compared the Colleges in the USA, where Stsdiums can seat 110,000 people and there are massively successful alumni who can fund the College Programmes. He decided to phone Fitzgerald again and tell him it was not working out and secured a contract with Penn State College Football Team.

He stayed for three years at Penn State coaching the University’s Football Team as well as being involved in Coaching 30 other sports during his time there, including the College Rugby Team, and the USA Women’s Rugby Squad which also had s base there. While involved with the USA Women’s Rugby Team he got to go to Canadaon Tour with the, and also travel to Wales, England and the World Cup in france in 2014. . By now Fitzgerald had moved on to become a Coach at the Houston Texans. Jones ended up taking a low level position with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, and from there went on to the Houston Texans in 2017, after Fitzgerald called him up when a position became vacant. [1]

At the Texans a typical day stated at 3 A.M. the S&C Staff train at 3:45 AM, At 6 AM they Preview the Day and set up the Weight Room. At 7 AM they train the 30-or-so Rookies (First Year Players). At 8 AM they have a team meeting and 8:30 AM the S&C staff meet for injury/rehab reports. 9 AM they train the five Long Snappers, Kickers and Punters. 10 AM is full practice – Three Hours Long. At 1 PM until 3 PM the non-Rookies are trained individually, staggerred, before they move off to their own individual training. After that it calms down – they eat, review what needs to be done in the Weightroom, look at data from Practice. at 5 or 6 PM another full team meeting and at 7 PM a Final walk-through for the Day. Once the meetings are finished around 8 or 9 PM, that’s the day done. [1]

From the Texans he took up the position of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Salt Lake Stalions, of the Alliance of American Football, a AAA American Football League, the equivalent of Championship in English Soccer, and from July 2019 to July 2020 was Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance at Wagner College, Staten Island, New York, a multi-sports NCAA College programme position. In December 2019 he took up the position of Head StrengthConditioning Coach at Rugby United in New York, and also the role of Strength and Conditioning Consultant. From June 2018 to August 2020 he was also Head of Physical Performance of USA Rugby and at the same time Physical Performance Consultant.

In 1976 the National Football League expanded to 28 teams with the addition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks. In between this expansion and the relocation of the St. Louis Cardinals to Phoenix, Arizona in 1988, two Irish-born players, Neil O’Donoghue from Dublin, and John Sinnott from Wexford played in the National Football League. O’Donoghue was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1977, and went on to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1978 to 1979 and St. Louis Cardinals from 1980 to 1985. Sinnott was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1978, but cut from the roster in Training Camp, and picked up by the New York Giants, where he was on the Roster from 1980 to 1981, before playing for the Baltimore Colts in 1982.

The Standings and Playoff Results of the NFL (1976-1987) are followed by the Career Statistics and Biographies of the two Irish-born Players in this period, as well as a Video Highlights reel of Neil O’Donoghue playing for the Cardinals and Buccaneers.

Factfile

O’Donoghue, Cornelius Joseph Dennis

Height: 6’6″ Weight: 210lb

Born: 18 June 1953, Dublin, Ireland

High School:

National Amateur: Dublin Minors [GAA Football][1970]

Semi-Pro: Shamrock Rovers[Soccer][1971-72][1972-73][1973-74]

College: St. Bernard College, Auburn [Soccer 1974] Auburn Tigers [1975][1976]

Pro Football: Buffalo Bills [1977] Tampa Bay Buccaneers [1978][[1979] St. Louis Cardinals [1980][1981][1982][1983][1984][1985]

Draft: 5th Round (127th Overall) 1977 Buffalo Bills

Honours: All-American (Auburn 1976).

Biography

Neil O’Donoghue was born in Dublin in 1953 and grew up in Clondalkin, where at the age of 12 he started playing Gaelic Football (GAA) where he excelled, being selected for the Dublin Minor Team which reached the All Ireland Final in 1970, losing to Cork. He switched codes to Soccer, scoring on his debut for Shamrock Rovers in the League of Ireland when he was 18. He played 16 games for Rovers, scoring two goals, and gaining a soccer Scholarship to St. Bernard’s College, in Alabama, the first Irishman ever to gain a Soccer Scholarship to the USA.

After the College Soccer Programme closed down he transfered to Auburn University, winning the starting Kicker position for the Tigers. In 1976 he won All-American Honours for Auburn, who play in the SEC (South Eastern Conference – traditionally the best in US College Football). He was drafted to the NFL (National Football League) in 1977 by the Buffalo Bills, playing five games before being cut from the roster and picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played two year, turning around a 2-26 record in the first two years of the expansion franchise to a 15-17 record.

He then signed for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1980, where he managed to set the record for points scored in a season for the team which stood for 21 years, but will probably be best remembered by the Cardinals (now Arizona Cardinals) fans for lacking clutch kicking skills, most notably missing three Field Goals in a Playoff match against the New York Giants in 1983, including a 19-yard attempt in overtime which would have won the game for St. Louis. On the last day of the season in 1984 he missed what would have been a game-winning Field Goal in the dying seconds which would have secured a Playoff place. After the 1985 season he retired. He continued to play Senior Football Championship Football for Round Towers GAA in Clondalkin during the NFL off-season.

Biography

His High School Football Coach told hm that he might get injured in his first few weeks playing Football, so he should not concentrate on just Football, as his College Academic Achievement was as important, something which is not all that common these days. [Reference: 2] While at Brown, he played in the most successful Brown University Football Team in 50 years, in 1976 emulating the Iron Men of 1926 in winning their first Ivy League Chamoionship in half a century. [Reference: 8]

After College he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was cut from the roster during training camp. John was subsequently picked up by the New York Giants, and after two years on the squad, he was traded to the Baltimore Colts. There he played in 9 games in 1982, before injuring his back, an injury which still bothers him to this day, and retired from Football. [Reference: 11-12]

New York Jets topped the 1992 AFC Preseason Standings with a perfect 4-0 record, and likewise in the NFC both San Francisco 49ers (5-0) and Minnesota Vikings (4-0) had 100% records. Minnesota had out-scored opponents 140-6, including a 56-3 drubbing of Cleveland Browns in Preseason Week 4, and a 30-0 whitewash of Washington Redskins in Preseason Week 5.

Notable Match-Ups included the LA War between Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Raiders which went the Rams way 19-16 in a battle of Field Goal Kickers. Likewise in the War of Texas, Dallas Cowboys narrowly lost to Houston Oilers 17-16. Miami Dolphins hosted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Battle of Florida, winning 22-7, and in the New York Battle New York Jets downed New York Giants 20-14.

In American Bowls, Miami Dolphins defeated Washington Redskins 22-21. In Tokyo, Japan, the Houston Oilers triumphed 34-23 over the Dallas Cowboys, and in London, England, San Francisco 49ers won 17-15 against Washington Redskins.
