Report

The Men’s Challenge Trophy was the European Handball Federations competition for emerging Nations. Having competed with club sides & countries like Greenland in the mid-1990s, Ireland entered this competition for the first time in 1999.

In Ireland’s seventh time entering the competition in 2012, they were placed in the tougher Group with previous winners Georgia, Faroe Islands & England.

Ireland lost all three group games, finishing last, which was a disappointment following the promise shown in the two previous Challenge Cups.

Moldova won the tournament for the third time, beating Faroe Islands 30-28 in a close encounter in the Final.

About

Olympic Handball, sometimes called Team Handball or European Handball, is a team sport similar to Indoor Soccer or Futsal, except hands are used rather than feet.

The object of the sport is to pass the ball using only the hands in order to get into a semi-circle around the opposing teams goal, where a shot may be taken. Each score counts as one goal, and the court is the exact same as a Futsal court indeed Futsal was invented as an Indoor version of Soccer, using the Olympic Handball court.

The sport was invented in Germany & Northern Europe at the end of the 19th Century & beginning of the 20th Century.

In Ireland’s fifth time entering the competition in 2009, they were placed in a Western Group involving Finland, who were hardly an emerging Nation at Olympic Handball, Malta & Scotland.

Ireland had a disappointing opening loss to Malta, before defeat to eventual Champions Finland. They won their last match 35-29 to finish off bottom for the second Challenge Trophy in a row, although more could have been expected following their showing in 2007.

Finland went on to win the Trophy, 30-28 in the Final against defending Champions Georgia.

In Ireland’s fifth time entering the competition in 2007, they eventually finished off the bottom, with a win over Scotland and a draw with Malta in their five matches

The Tournament was doubled in size for 2007, with a separate tournament in Eastern & Western Europe, with the two winners meeting in the final.

The Western Tournament started off like the four previous Challenge Trophy’s for Ireland with three straight defeats, although a much better display was put on by Ireland, with a draw with Malta in their fourth match (25-25) and victory over Scotland in their last match by a score of 27-23 giving Ireland their first points since 1999 in the tournament. Ireland finished off bottom for the first time ever, with fourth place of six in the Western Tournament.

Newcomers Georgia defeated two-time defending Champions Moldova on the way to a narrow 28-27 victory over Luxembourg in the Final.

Report

The Men’s Challenge Trophy was the European Handball Federations competition for emerging Nations. Having competed with club sides & countries like Greenland in the mid-1990s, Ireland entered this competition for the first time in 1999.

In Ireland’s second time entering the competition in 2001, they found the task even harder than in 1999, with newly independent countries like Estonia & Latvia, where the sport has been played for decades, dominating.

Ireland and Malta (the only team they beat in 1999) were outclassed by the more established emerging nations, and again met in the last placement match, where this tome Malta won 32-21, leaving Ireland with a record of 5 losses from 5 matches.

Report

The Men’s Challenge Trophy was the European Handball Federations competition for emerging Nations. Having competed with club sides & countries like Greenland in the mid-1990s, Ireland entered this competition for the first time in 1999.

They found the level hard-going at first, losing all five group games, before winning their final placement match 23-19 over Malta.
