Australian Inter-State Millennium Tournament Results 2000 [Ref: 1]

Report

Three of Australia’s State Gridiron sides met for the Millennium Tournament in Adelaide from 22 to 29 January 2000. The Victoria Volunteers and South Australia Dragons easily dealt with the Alice Springs Redbacks.

In the Final Group match the SA Dragons won thanks to QB Shane Challans connecting with Dallas Turner with a fourth-and-goal touchdown play. The result was reversed, however, in the Final, with the Victoria Volunteers winning 9-0.

Tasmanian Gridiron League Playoffs 2001-2002 [Ref: 3]

Report

University Wildcats met Clarence Sharks each year in the Tasmanian Gridiron League Island Bowl from 2000 to 2001, with the Wildcats defeating the Sharks 38-8 in Island Bowl X in 2001. In 2002 the Glenorchy Raiders shocked the Clarence Sharks in the Playoff Game.

There were three teams in the TGL each year from 1999-2000 to 2001-02 with all three teams making the Playoffs.

Victorian Gridiron Football League Playoffs 1989 [Ref: 2-3]

The Brighton Outlaws won their third straight Vic Bowl for the Victorian Gridiron Football League title in 1988, triumphing 20-17 in a closely fought encounter with the Melbourne Hornets. Melbourne led 17-6 at half time, through touchdowns from Running Backs Peter Dionysion and George Makis, but the Outlaws hit back through a TD from Bruce Ayles.

The turning point in the game came in the last 30 seconds as Dionysion fumbled the ball and the Outlaws recovered on the Hornets 25 yard line. On a 4th-and-10 with 11 seconds left Outlaws QB Jim Borta found Treye Jackson for the winning score.

In the 1989 Vic Bowl the Peninsular Sweathogs came into the game as odds on favourites, but five timely interceptions by the Doncaster Devils defense kept them in the game in the first half in front of 1,500 fans. The Sweathogs had 18 first downs in the third quarter to the Devils 7, but just as it seemed the Devils were about to give up, QB Peter Busch, scrambled for a 56 yard touchdown on a broken play in a third-and-five at their own 44 yard line.

Gerard Hoskins levelled matters for the Sweathogs on a short-yard run and the Sweathogs forced a safety on the next series, but on another broken play – the Devils designated Offensive player did not work all day – Busch broke out again for a 64-yard rushing TD. The Extra-Point was kicked and the Devils were Vic Bowl V Champions. Gerard Hoskins won the game MVP Award, for his rushing, six receptions and numerous kick returns.

Victorian Gridiron Football League Final Standings 2001 [Ref: 3]

Western Crusaders won the Victorian Gridiron Football League Vic Bowl in 1999 and 2000. In the fifth period of Overtime in 1999, Quarterback Glenn Parker connected with Wide Receiver Tal Brown for the winning touchdown, to give the Crusaders a 20-14 victory over the Croydon Rangers.

In the 2000 Vic Bowl XVI, the Crusaders defeated Nunawading Warriors 14-0 to take their second title in two years.

There were six teams in the VGFL in 1999: The aforementioned, Crusaders, Rangers and Warriors, as well as the Geelong Wildcats, Berwick Miners and Steelers. The Steelers dropped out after the 1999 season leaving five teams for both the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Rockingham Vipers won four West Bowls straight between 2014-15 and 2017-18, before Swan City Titans interrupted their streak in 2018-19. The Vipers won it back in 2019-20, triumphing 42-12 against the Titans in West Bowl XXV.

The West Bowl is the Mens Competition Grand Final for Gridiron West (Western Australia).

In a hotly-contested Gridiron Queensland 1988-89 season, Brisbane Bulldogs triumphed 7-6 in the Grand Final, after finishing third in the Regular Season on 7 Wins and 2 Losses. Centurionshad finished on top of the standings with an 8-1 record and City warriors in second on a 8-1-1 (Wins-Losses-Ties) record. In all 8 teams entered the Mens Competition in 1988-89.

Bondi raiders won Gridiron News South Wales’ Waratah Bowl V in 1989, by a single point over Sydney Uni Lions. The Sydney Uni Lions looked like they had it in the bag with less than 90 seconds on the clock, but a series of errors deep in their own territory cost them the game.

The Lions had to start from their own seven yard line after receiving a punt, and then QB Eric Carrier was sacked on his own four yard line. On third down they went for a long pass which was sensationally intercepted by Free Safety Joe Desmid, giving the Raiders a last shot.

Back-Up QB for the Raiders, James Hayes, hit sent a 36-yard pass to flanker Harry Pavlidia, and then a draw play gained them another seven yards to the Lions’ eight yard line. Again QB Hayes found his man, Harry Pavlidia, who slipped into the endzone. Powers kicked the extra point which proved to be the difference between the teams, but it was the strange decision to go long earlier which cost the Lions.

The first quarter had been scoreless, and in the second Lions QB Carrier found Tom Boardman for a 75 yard TD reception. Another long punt by Powers had the Lions on their 3 yard line, and on a QB sneak Roy Herman stripped the Lions QB of the ball giving them possession on the 5 yard line. With 30 seconds to go in the half Rookie Brett Mason scored on a counter play, and with the kick good, both teams were level on 7-7 at the half.

In the third quarter there was no scoring, but in the fourth the Lions QB pitched out to John Kirby in the backfield on a third-and-nine. Carrier then swung out left and Kirby sent him the ball back and in he went for the score. The Raiders were stunned, but managed to regain composure and block the score. This set the scene for the crazy scenes at the end of the game. [Ref: 7]

Gridiron NSW Mens Competition Playoffs 2019 [Ref: 6-8]

Report

Will Bartels scored a last second 70 yard TD reception for the Northern Sydney Rebels, to break a 32-32 deadlock and win Waratah Bowl XXXVI 38-32 for the Rebels against the UNSW Raiders.

Gridiron New South Wales is one of seven State or Territory American Football Leagues (known as Gridiron in Australia to avoid confusion with their own AFL) in Australia and has been running since 1985.

Gridiron NSW had 10 teams in its Mens Competition in 2018, with UNSW Raiders and Sydney Uni Lions meeting in the Grand Final. For 2019 the Mens Competition dropped to 8 teams as the Central Coast Sharks and Newcastle Kings dropped out.

The Australian Capital Territory Gridiron League had four teams in 2000: Tuggeranong Tornadoes, University of Canberra Firebirds, Queanbeyan Warriors and Canberra Tigers.

Capital Bowl VIII was won by Tuggeranong Tornadoes. In 2001 the Tigers were replaced by the Astros, who immediately went to the top of the League, capturing the Capital Bowl from 2001 to 2004. IN 2005 the ACTGL dropped down to three Senior Teams as Queanbeyan dropped out, however it went up to five in 2007 with the addition of the Centurions and Gladiators. University of Canberra Firebirds won the Capital Bowl from 2005 to 2008.

The Australian Capital Territory Gridiron League is a Senior (Adult) American Football League in the ACT (Canberra) Territory in Australia.
