Shamrock Bowl All-Star Game

Saturday, December 17, 1949, Rice Stadium, Houston, Texas, Att: 12,000

AAFC All-Stars 12 Cleveland Browns 7 – The Shamrock Bowl All-Star Game was the last ever game played by the All-America Football Conference, as the league merged with the National Football League after the season. It was organised as a Charity Event by Glenn McCarthy, who had tried to purchase a franchise in the league after the season, and before it merged with the NFL. It was the only All-Star Game played by the AAFC, and was a Charity Event in aid of the Hally Hall Home for the Aged, the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund, and the National Kids Day Foundation, and is also notable for being one of the first racially-integrated sports events in Houston. The AAFC All-Stars won the game 12-7 with two touchdowns either side of a Cleveland Browns one. Mutryn ran in the first, and Dub Jones replied for Cleveland with a pass from Graham. Baldwin won the game for the All-Stars with a 23 yard reception from Albert.

The All-American football Conference of 1946-1949 was a successful rival to the NFL, so much so, that the two leagues agreed to merge in 1950, although in essence it was a takeover of the three most successful AAFC clubs by the NFL – San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns & Baltimore Colts.

The League was won by the Cleveland Browns all four seasons – in 1946 they defeated New York Yankees 14-9, and in 1948 defeated the Buffalo Bills in the Championship game 49-7 before beating the San Francisco 49ers in the 1949 Championship Game 21-7

Of particular note for Irish American Football fans, is the last ever game, the Shamrock Bowl Charity All-Star Game, the only one played by the AAFC. It was organised by Glenn McCarthy, who had tried to purchase the Cleveland Browns and move them to Houston after the 1949 season, and before it merger with the NFL in 1950. It was played in aid of three charities, and was also notable for the fact it was one of the first ever racially integrated sports events ever played in Houston.

Glenn McCarthy was a Houston Oil millionaire who opened the Shamrock Hotel in Houston on St. Patrick’s Day 1949. He was several generations removed from his Irish ancestors from Co. Cork, and was one of the richest men in America, and probably the richest in Texas. He was known as  “King of the wildcatters”, a term applied to the early Irish in the oil fields of Pennsylvania, in reference to people who find oil in places not proven to have oil [Ref: 2]

Pacific Coast League Baseball Champions 1903-Present [Ref: 1]

*League play was suspended on July q14 due to wartime travel restrictions.

**Declared Co-Champions due to continuous rain in the playoffs

***Declared Co-Champions due to September 11 Attacks.

About

The Pacific Coast League is currently one of three Triple-A (AAA) Baseball Leagues (2nd Level), in the Minor League Baseball System, along with the International League and the Mexican League. The winners play for the Triple-A Championship with the winners of the International League.

The Pacific Coast League is based primarily West of the Mississippi, but was once just located along the Pacific Coast of the United States, from Seattle to San Diego.

Major League Baseball has reused the names Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres from the Pacific Coast League, which were essentially promotions for those organisations, even though they are counted as separate teams and organisations.

About

The American West Football Conference is a AA Indoor American Football League which started playing in the American Northwest in 2019 to fill in the gap in Professional Indoor Football League on the West Coast (San Diego, Arizona & Oakland have teams in the Indoor Football League but that is primarily a Mid-West League). About the CIF

The Champions Indoor Football is a AA (Third Level) American Football League based primarily in the Texas and Prairie States of the Mid-West. It is one of 4 AA Indoor Football Leagues in the USA, the others in the Eastern Seaboard( American Arena League), West (American West Football Conference) and Southwest & Mexico (Super 8 Football League)

About Arena / Indoor Football

Indoor (also known as Arena) Football plays an 8 v 8 version of American Football on a converted Ice Hockey Rink 50-yards long with 2 10 -yard endzones. Teams have 5 downs (attempts) to score or the ball is turned over – 3 of which must be passing plays. It is therefore a higher scoring game than standard 11 v 11 American Football. The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there is no rebound net either side of the goalposts in Indoor Football. Arena Football rules allow the ball stay in play when it comas back off the rebound nets.

Report

Yellow Group: Ireland 18 China 3: Ireland opened their 2018 FIL world Championships in style with an 18-3 victory over China. Ted Forst (6 Pts) and Corey McMahon (5 Pts) led the Irish points scorers.[4]

Yellow Group: Ireland 14 Denmarkk 3: Ireland finished top of the Yellow Group by dominating Denmark in their second game. The Offense controlled the game with help from Luke Palmadesso and Sonny Campbell at the Face-Offs, while the Defense almost totally shut-out the Danes. Offensive Player of the Game was Andy Meyers for a couple of goals and two-way performance. Defensive Player of the Game was Gearoid Dunbar for great positioning and tough defending.[5]

1st Tournament Tree Round: Ireland 12 Latvia 7: In the first of the Tournament Tree Rounds, Ireland defeated Latvia 12-7, taking control of the game early on, but Latvia were able to stay in touch as the game progressed. Ireland’s Offense kept possession, taking advantage of Latvia’s no pressure Defence, while Latvia were the first team in the tournament to challenge Ireland’s Defense, with big, athletic forwards. Offensive Player of the Game was Teddy Forst for his hat-trick and smart play, while Defensive Player of the Game was Connor Kelly in goals for making dynamic saves.[6]

2nd Tournament Tree Round: Ireland 15 Italy 7: Ireland went 4-0 in the Tournament beating Italy 15-7, keeping the Italians pinned down for course of the match. Despite the tough Italian Defense Ireland were able to score with almost every shot on goal, and Aaron Cahill took a pounding from the Italy Defense while scoring two important goals, which earned him Offensive Player of the Game. Peter Sullivan earned Defensive Player of the Game for Lock-Down Isolation Defense and team defense awareness, as well as causing a number of turnovers.[7]

3rd Tournament Tree Round: Ireland 4 Israel 16: Ireland came away from this match with their first loss of the tournament to the Hosts, who played the best match of their tournament. Israel’s defense was big and dexterous, and their goalie kept Ireland to only four goals, as Ireland faced their biggest challenge yet everywhere on the field. Plamadesso and Campbell hotly contested each Face-off and held their own, although Ireland’s Defense took the biggest pounding anywhere on the field, though they recovered somewhat in the second half.[8]

Placement Round 1: Place 3: Ireland 10 England 11: Ireland were punching above their weight in this match against England. Twice the Top Division side were held even with Ireland, at 9-9 and 10-10, after Ireland came out strongly, going 5-1 up in the First Quarter to shock one of the Old Powers of the sport. England made some big adjustments to their style of play in the second quarter, running a run-and-gun style attack and taking advantage of superiority in man-up opportunities as they came back into the game, as the game was tied 7-7 at the half. The second half saw few goals scored as both teams scored two in the third to again be level at the end of a quarter. With only fives minutes remaining the score was still level at 10-10 but the English found a hole in transition and put one past the Irish goalie. Ireland went on the attack immediately to try and get the equalizer but it was to no avail as a technical foul in the last minute saw the ball turned over and England managed to run out the clock. It was a remarkable performance from the Irish team which showed what the Ireland Lacrosse program is capable of, coming within a whisker of beating one of the top 5 teams in the World. [9]

Placement Round 2: 9th-12th Semi-Finals: Ireland 5 Germany 14: Coming down after the high of the near shock match with England, Ireland lost 14-5 to old nemesis Germany. Ireland made a number of miss-steps in the Penalty Box, giving Germany plenty of Man-Up Opportunities which they capitalised on. For most of the first half Ireland led as the Offense found the net on a few occasions. After that, the offense conceded forced turnovers which left the Defense on the back foot for most of the second half. Tiredness had set in and the Defense also made mistakes, failing to clear consistently, as Ireland wilted under pressure and lost 14-5.[10]

Placement Round 3: 11th Place: Ireland 10 Scotland 14: With the last game of the tournament, Ireland fought gallantly but lost to a Scotland team which had started in the Top Group and had lost all of its matches prior to this one. Despite leading early with goals from Wallace, Cahill, Forst and Wichmann Scotland fired off seven wwithout reply to put the game beyond the Irish, however, 12th out of 46 was a good finish for Ireland and they could look over the tournament with some sense of Pride with success early on and close games against some of the giants of the game.[11]
