About

Euro XIII is a new European Professional Rugby League Cup, operating mostly in the non-traditional Rugby League areas of Europe. Dublin Blues will compete with teams from Edinburgh (Scotland), Rhonnda (Wales), Birmingham (England) as well as 12 other teams from Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Turkey and Moldova.

Dublin Blues are Ireland’s oldest Rugby League team, founded by Brian Corrigan in 1989, and who won the inaugural Grand Final in 1997 in Rugby League Ireland, defeating Tallaght Tigers, and also that year becoming the first Irish side to compete in Rugby League’s Challenge Cup in Britain.

In 2008 the club folded, but were intending to come back last year as an outfit playing in the English Leagues, although the prospect of an Irish team playing all their games on the road put them off and with the new Euro XIII Cup the working group set about entering and have so far signed up two Irish internationals and a Head Coach. Report

The Irish Rugby Football Union introduced the All-Ireland League as a level above the Provincial Leagues in 1991-92.

Limerick Clubs dominated play during the first decade of the League, with Garryowen (1991-92 and 1993-94) and Young Munster (1992-93) winning the first three, before another Limerick club, Shannon, won four in a row from 1994-95 to 1997-98.

The AIL then introduced a knockout Top Four Playoff system in 1998-99.

Report

Linda Holland was born in Cork before moving to Perth, Western Australia in 2009. She started playing American Football there and in 2013 when the Legends Football League came to Australia she jumped at the opportunity to play Professional American Football. Even though the League has garnered criticism for the tiny shorts and crop tops the players wear (at first they played in Lingerie but that was changed after sexism claims) Linda said it was an honour to represent her country, describing herself as “Irish by birth, Irish by grace of God”. [1]

The Western Australia Angels reached the Final in 2013-14, losing 36-15 to NSW Surge.[8] They had qualified for the Legends Cup by finishing second in the four team league with a 2-2 record, losing in Week 1, 26-32 to the Victoria Maidens, before winning the next two against NSW Surge, 20-18 in Week 3, and 41-0 against Queensland Brigade in Week 5. They surprisingly lost their last regular season match 26-19 in the return match with Queensland, but made the Legends Cup Final on head-to-head.

The Lingerie Football League was a Ladies 7v7 Indoor Gridiron (American Football) League that started as an alternative to the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2004. The Ladies played with very little in terms of protective clothing. The League was criticized as sexist, although in 2013 the lingerie was replaced with bicycle shorts and crop-tops, changing its name to the Legends Football League in the process.

In 2012-13 LFL Global introduced a four-team League in Canada, which lost its broadcasting rights after one season, and was replaced by another four team league in Australia, which again only lasted one season.

Report

The Vatican City plays its own brand of soccer, with a blue card introduced in the 8-team Vatican City Football League to combat persistent fouling, whereby a player receiving the card spends 5 minutes in the sin-bin.

It is not a member of FIFA, one of nine sovereign Nations that aren’t, but has played International matches against Monaco (five times, losing every time, and only scoring one goal), as well as matches against club sides, including German Anarchist team St. Pauli, and other German teams Leisweiler Elf, losing 8-1, and Lutherstadt Wittenberg, a 1-0 win.

It has also played Swiss side SV Vollmond, winning 5-1 and Liechtenstein’s 8th Division side Azzurri Schaan, losing 8-1. In 2019 the Vatican City men’s team played Raetia, a Swiss province that speaks the fourth language in Switzerland (German, French and Italian are the other three), although it has never entered the CONIFA World Cup alongside non-recognised countries such as Northern Cyprus and Kurdistan.

In 2019 the Vatican City launched a Women’s National Team, with the blessing of Pope Francis, although the team’s first match against Austrian team Mariahilf was cancelled at the last minute due to protests in the stands against the Roman Catholic Church’s stance on Gays and Women.

Contrary to popular belief, anyone who is resident in 801-strong population of the Vatican City is eligible to play in both the League and National teams, not just Catholic Priests. [References: 1-2]

Report

The Celtic League in Rugby Union underwent another name change in 2017 with the addition of two South African Provinces: Southern Kings and Cheetahs. Leinster won the Championship in 2017-18 and again in 2018-19, and were well out in front in 2019-20 after winning all of their first 13 games before the COVID-19 virus outbreak caused the cancellation of the rest of the season.

Report

In the seven seasons the Pro 12 operated as a 12-team League, Irish Provinces dominated, winning four of the seven Championships. Leinster won the Championship in 2012-13 and 2013-14, Munster were Champions in 2010-11, and Connacht triumphed for the first time in 2015-16. Welsh sides Ospreys (based in Swansea) won in 2011-12, and Scarlets (based in Llanelli) won in 2016-17, with Glasgow Warriors winning it for Scotland in 2014-15.

The Pro 12, run by Celtic Rugby Ltd, became a 12-team League in 2010-11 with the admission of two Italian teams, with each team playing home & away for a 22-game season plus a Final Series featuring the Top 4. After one year where it continued to be known as the Magners League due to sponsorship reasons it changed its name to the Pro 12.

In addition the top teams qualified for the European Champions Cup alongside the Top French (Top 14) and English (Premiership) teams. After 2017, two South African Provinces, Southern Kings and Cheetahs were admitted, changing the name of the League to the Pro 14.
